Policy Regarding Suicide Postings

The Recovery Boat should be a safe, enjoyable, challenging and supportive environment for all members. We have members from all over the world, all walks of life and in all stages of recovery. Given the well evidenced fact that many people with eating disorders also suffer from other mental health and physical health issues, it is inevitable that there will be times when we find ourselves struggling more than usual and needing extra support.

Part of supporting each other is creating boundaries around what is appropriate and what is inappropriate given the limitations of the internet and our abilities. We can support each other but we cannot save each other and no one should be put in a position of fearing for another person's safety.

Please do not post any kind of suicide threat or threat of harming yourself or others. Even if it is meant half heartedly or as a cry for help it is unfair on the members who will read it and be helpless to reach you. Regardless of your actual safety or the legitimacy of the crisis, we care for each other, sometimes more than we care for ourselves yet we have no way of contacting or physically helping someone we know only through the computer. Self harm and suicide are issues that many members have dealt with in their lives and we really would like to avoid triggering memories, feelings and behaviours in others. Recovery Boat members, and the forum as a whole could also suffer legal consequences should such threats be discovered too late.

If you are feeling suicidal or like harming yourself, please reach out for help in your real life. There are help lines, emergency medical centres and emergency services such as police and ambulance you can call. Please remember that although you may feel that Recovery Boat members can sympathise or understand how you are feeling better than other people, there is nothing we can do to physically help you.

Threats of suicide or self harm are damaging to other members who are left helpless and distraught. Posts in violation of this policy will be deleted and you will be reminded of what you need to do to help yourself. Repeat violations will result in further action and may lead to banning.
